How we check clinics

Every listed dentist must have a professional license (cédula profesional) that you can look up yourself in Mexico’s public SEP registry. Ask any clinic for the cédula number and check it at cedulaprofesional.sep.gob.mx. We never publish fake reviews or ratings.

Questions

Is it safe to get dental work in Mexico?

Many patients have good results, and some have serious problems, so safety depends on the specific clinic and dentist. Verify the dentist's license, ask for written quotes and warranties, check reviews from independent sources, and plan for follow-up care at home. Border Quotes does not give medical advice and cannot guarantee any clinic.

How do I verify a dentist's cédula profesional?

Search the public Registro Nacional de Profesionistas at cedulaprofesional.sep.gob.mx, which is run by the Mexican Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP). Enter the professional's name, and check that the cédula number and the profession (odontología) match the dentist in front of you. The lookup is free. The SEP notes that the registry is updated periodically, so ask the clinic for the cédula number and confirm it on the official site.

Do clinics offer a warranty?

It depends on the clinic and the treatment. Ask for the warranty in writing before you pay, including the length, what it covers (materials, labor, follow-up visits), and who to contact if something fails after you return home. A verbal promise is not enough.

How do I pay?

Payment methods and whether prices are quoted in US dollars or Mexican pesos depend on the clinic. Ask for the full price, including materials, lab fees and extra procedures, and get a written estimate before any treatment starts. Compare the final total, not the headline price.

Will my US dental insurance cover treatment in Mexico?

Usually not, or only partly. Many US dental plans cover care only from in-network providers, and Medicare generally does not cover routine dental care. Check your plan's terms about out-of-country care and ask your insurer before you travel. Some patients use the plan's out-of-network reimbursement, but confirm this with your insurer.

How long are the border wait times?

They vary a lot by port, day and time of day, and pedestrian lines can be long at peak hours. CBP publishes live wait times at bwt.cbp.gov. Check before you leave, and plan extra time for the return trip into the US.

What does Border Quotes do?

Border Quotes is a quote and reference service that helps US patients compare dental treatment options and cost ranges in Mexican border cities. We are not a clinic, we do not provide dental or medical treatment, and we do not replace a dentist's exam. The final decision and the final price are between you and the clinic.

How much does it cost to use Border Quotes?

Using Border Quotes is free for the patient. You pay only the clinic for any treatment you choose, and you should get the clinic's written quote before you agree to anything.
